Responsibilities of the course manager

The MAKVIS model
The term MAKVIS (Eng.: MACVIC) one puts weight on Motivation, Activation, Concretizing, Variations, Individualization and Co-operation as basic pedagogical principles in an e-learning environment. Further is a description on the main elements of the model:
  • What motivates course activities?
    • Headwords : relevant content, well prepared, adapted to the course participants situation
  • How to activate the student?
    • For online studying the activity will vary depending on the activity among the course participants, or on their workload at home (or at work), etc.. This means that the course participants must discuss course content with other course participants through the web interface (as often as they can)
  • How to concretize subjects and make it understandable?
    • Multimedia technology is recommended (illustrations, sounds, movies, etc). Tasks where the course participant has to gather data (by observation, interviews, etc.), or activity at their own work space (or other relevant environments) can be a good way of concretizing subjects
  • How to make a varying learning environment?
    • Demand regarding papers, chats (with logging), multimedia presentations of student work, etc.. Learning predicts communication (procurement of learning experience). Different communications possibilities must be made available throughout the course (both synchronous and asynchronous)
  • How to stimulate own activities (for the different individuals)?
    • It is recommended that each course participant should present him- or herself to all other participants when initializing the course. It is encouraged to show (and tell) the others which acquirements one has and to give meanings that may stimulate the learning process
  • How to stimulate co-operation?
    • Use the online possibilities that exists: e-mail, notes, slides, information sources on the web, different logs, etc.. It is also recommended that one arranges physical meetings.
During the course the course manager should be in frequent contact with the course participants. As a course manager you should check:
  • ... if the course participants are active
  • ... if anyone needs additional support
  • ... if anyone dominates or are too passive when they co-operate with other students on the web
  • ... follow up teamwork
  • ... evaluate each participants course progression
  • ... answer questions (both professional and administrative) within 48 hours
  • ... forwarding contact with the right instances
  • ... guide the course participants when necessary
  • ... etc.....
